'They're our core': Lyons' trio of seniors deliver in win against Lincoln-Way East

30+ min ago (612+ words) Lincoln-Way East guard Ellie Guyette (22) battle for control of the ball with Lyons guard Emma O'Brien (43) and guard Gwen Smith (21) during a Thanksgiving Basketball Tournament at Lyons Township High School in La Grange on Saturday, Nov. 29, 2025. | Lyons is at its best when it turns defense into offense. That's not to say the Lions aren't potent in the halfcourt, but defense is their calling card. With O'Brien, a 6-1 senior, at the top of their 1-2-2 press, Lyons can force turnovers because of her long wingspan that forces a litany of deflections and errant passes. "My teammates give me confidence," said O'Brien, who finished with 13 points and eight rebounds. "I just wanted to find ways to impact the game so I could stay in the flow because eventually I need to make those shots." Lyons was able to win 55-42 against Lincoln-Way East because…...

Tom Stoppard, sparkling playwright who won an Oscar for 'Shakespeare In Love,' dies at 88

44+ min ago (1093+ words) Tom Stoppard attends the opening night of "Arcadia" at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre on Broadway in March 2011. LONDON " British playwright Tom Stoppard, a playful, probing dramatist who won an Academy Award for the screenplay for 1998s "Shakespeare In Love," has died. He was 88. In a statement Saturday, United Agents said the Czech-born Stoppard " often hailed as the greatest British playwright of his generation " died "peacefully" at his home in Dorset in southwest England, surrounded by his family. "He will be remembered for his works, for their brilliance and humanity, and for his wit, his irreverence, his generosity of spirit and his profound love of the English language," they said. "It was an honor to work with Tom and to know him." Rolling Stones front man Mick Jagger was among those paying tribute, calling Stoppard "a giant of the English theater, both…...

The Bulls have a roster construction problem and that falls on one man

50+ min ago (702+ words) Karnisovas has asked for patience as he attempts to reload the roster, but this is Year 6 and there's one playoff game win on his resume. And the way the 2025-26 team has been playing, there won't be a second playoff game win anytime soon. It's not Noa Essengue's fault. After all, the Bulls fell on the 18-year-old Frenchman, he didn't fall on them. Yet, here we are at about the quarter mark of the regular season after Saturday's tilt with Indiana, and of all 14 lottery selections from the highly vaunted 2025 NBA draft class, Essengue (selected No. 12) has seen the least amount of floor time and it's not even close. Again, not his fault. It doesn't matter that Karnisovas promised a return to the Michael Jordan Championship glory days when he was hired now going on six seasons ago. It doesn't matter…...

Pope Leo XIV given baseball bat owned by White Sox Hall of Famer Nellie Fox

2+ hour, 51+ min ago (407+ words) How did you get this through security?" Pope Leo XIV asked CBS News correspondent Chris Livesay who handed the pontiff Nellie Fox's Louisville Slugger bat, a family heirloom, on a flight from Rome to Turkey this week. During his first papal trip abroad, Pope Leo XIV was presented with a baseball bat once owned by legendary White Sox player Nellie Fox. CBS News correspondent Chris Livesay gifted the pontiff Fox's Louisville Slugger, as part of a tradition of members of the press bringing gifts as Leo made an unannounced trip through the plane to greet the Vatican press corp. When Livesay pointed out the initials and number on the end of the bat, which was given to him by his cousin, the pope's eyes lit up, CBS reported. How did you get this through security?" the pope said to laughs…...

Caleb Williams: On offense, Bears 'haven’t hit our pinnacle yet"

3+ hour, 35+ min ago (733+ words) The play was designed to go to D'Andre Swift. The Bears led by eight halfway into the fourth quarter Friday when Caleb Williams took a snap from under center and rolled left, where he was supposed to throw to his running back in the flat. With Swift four yards in front of him, Williams felt Eagles safety Sydney Brown crashing toward the line of scrimmage. That left the other safety, Reed Blankenship, as the only person covering tight end Cole Kmet, who ran a corner route. With no help behind Blankenship, Williams could loft a pass into the blustery sky and into the left corner of the end zone " so long as he led Kmet. "That's the fun part about playing QB " it's dealing with conditions and then finding ways to try to calculate where you need to put the…...

Ben Johnson brings success — and fun — back to Bears with equal parts strategy, leadership

3+ hour, 47+ min ago (947+ words) Bears head coach Ben Johnson walks off the field following a game against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday, Nov. 23, 2025, at Soldier Field. Anyone remember Matt Eberflus" postgame victory speeches? Not likely. There weren"t many of them to begin with. New Bears coach Ben Johnson already has won more games at 9-3 than Eberflus did in any of his three seasons on his way to a 14-32 record and a quick firing. When they did win, though, the speeches were drier than reheated Thanksgiving turkey. Eberflus typically would go back over his pregame checklist in a manner far less captivating than the boisterous rallies Johnson has been leading. Eventually all of Eberflus" messages, good or bad, lost their flavor altogether. The liveliest the locker room got under his watch was at the end, when the Bears were in open revolt at Ford…...
