Penn State Notebook: Terry Smith says last 6 games have been a “good run”
51+ min ago (714+ words) PISCATAWAY, N.J. " Penn State interim head coach Terry Smith said Saturday night that director of athletics Pat Kraft hasn't told him when he will name a permanent coach. After the Nittany Lions' 40-36 comeback win over Rutgers, Smith was evasive when he was asked if he had received any clarity from Kraft or anyone else at Penn State about his future. "Last week I came in (to a postgame press conference) with a lot of energy, so to speak," he said. "I'm just thankful we won the game. I'm just thankful we have an opportunity to go to a bowl game. I'm thankful for those guys who played their hearts out for all of us." Smith, a former Penn State wide receiver, joined James Franklin's staff in 2014 as the cornerbacks coach. He was eventually promoted to associate head coach and became the…...

Autoimmune diseases can strike any part of the body, and mostly affect women. Here’s what to know
13+ hour, 5+ min ago (572+ words) By LAURAN NEERGAARD, Associated Press Our immune system has a dark side: It's supposed to fight off invaders to keep us healthy. But sometimes it turns traitor and attacks our own cells and tissues. What are called autoimmune diseases can affect just about every part of the body " and tens of millions of people. While most common in women, these diseases can strike anyone, adults or children, and they're on the rise. "This is probably the most exciting time that we've ever had to be in autoimmunity," said Dr. Amit Saxena, a rheumatologist at NYU Langone Health. Here are some things to know. They're also capricious: Even patients faring well for long periods can suddenly have a "flare" for no apparent reason. Many start with vague symptoms that come and go or mimic other illnesses. Many also have overlapping symptoms…...
Lehigh Valley wrestling: Notre Dame-Green Pond should reign again in Colonial League
13+ hour, 5+ min ago (1639+ words) Notre Dame-Green Pond remains the overwhelming favorite to repeat as the Colonial League's top team in 2025-26. The Crusaders return a wealth of talent led by senior Division I commits Dom Sumpolec and Connor Smalley. They also have an influx of state-level talent in freshmen Cole Schwartz and Max Quarry. Saucon Valley will be as young as it has been in at least the last 15 years, but coach Chad Shirk's team will be in contention again. Northwestern Lehigh still has only one senior starter, but should be even better than last year's team that reached the District 11 Class 2A team tournament final. Bangor, Palmerton and Lehighton are among the others who will have competitive dual-meet teams. Here is a team-by-team look at each of the 14 programs: Head coach: Richie Smith, 9th year (65-77) Top returnees: Sr. Carter Smith (133; District 11 4th, NE Regional 5th); So. Cole Smith;…...
Faith & Values: What is the real meaning of a blessing?
14+ hour, 35+ min ago (280+ words) Despair opens us up to powers beyond what we can control or understand Happy Thanksgiving weekend! As we gather around tables with family and friends we give thanks for the many blessings in our lives. But then Uncle Buck starts in about those people, why don't they get a job? Aunt Jane retorts with comments about the rich who pay no income tax and the conflict is on. Blessing? We forget all about our warm feelings and just try to keep the peace. This is practicing the simple rule of thumb we know as the golden rule: Ask yourself what you want people to do for you; then grab the initiative and do it for them. Jesus is saying stop the passivity. Get up, go ahead, do something, move, you who are hungry and thirsty for just treatment for such…...
Lehigh Valley boys basketball: A look at the Colonial League South where one of the teams that begin with an ‘S’ should have lots of success
14+ hour, 57+ min ago (836+ words) While both the Northwestern Lehigh and Southern Lehigh football teams have kept their seasons going all the way to the state finals at Cumberland Valley this week, the Colonial League's boys basketball season begins Tuesday night. While no one is talking about state championships in this sport, the league should feature plenty of competitive teams and talented players. Many of them are in the Colonial League South, where Catasauqua is a returning district champ and has several key players back from its memorable postseason run last winter. Salisbury showed what it can do in the summer by winning two championships, while Southern Lehigh has a new coach with a winning pedigree, and Saucon Valley still has a winning culture despite the loss of seven standout players from last year's team. Here's a look at the Colonial League's South Division: Palisades…...
Opinion: Transparency is the first step to safer schools
15+ hour, 35+ min ago (610+ words) As a father, I understand the concern that comes with sending your child off to school each day. We trust that our schools are doing everything they can to keep students safe. But when serious incidents happen, especially those involving weapons, families deserve to be informed quickly and directly. Unfortunately, that hasn't always been the case in Pennsylvania. Too often, parents and school staff learn about dangerous situations days or even weeks after they occur, sometimes through the media instead of from the school itself. That kind of delay doesn't just create confusion; it undermines trust and puts safety at risk. That's why I introduced Senate Bill 246, which was signed into law on Nov. 6 as Act 44 of 2026. This new law requires schools to notify parents, guardians, and school employees within 24 hours whenever a weapon is brought onto school property, a…...
Flyers Notebook: Tyson Foerster’s fast start something to build on
16+ hour, 4+ min ago (617+ words) NEWARK, N.J. " Things are going so well on the ice for Tyson Foerster this season that even his injury issues haven't slowed him down. First there was the elbow injury suffered in the World Championships that became infected and threatened his ability to start the season with the Flyers. That problem had a happy ending. But there have been more recent hurdles. He blocked a shot with his foot, costing him a few games. Then coach Rick Tocchet decided to break up the highly successful Foerster-Noah Cates-Bobby Brink line. Foerster, however, hasn't missed a beat. He scored his team-leading ninth goal of the season in Friday's 4-3 shootout win at the New York Islanders. At this rate, he could improve on last year's 25-goal performance, which came after a slow start. What's the difference with the quicker getaway this time around? "Getting…...

Letters to the Editor: E-bikes are making Lehigh Valley trails dangerous
16+ hour, 34+ min ago (703+ words) Thank you for covering the growing concerns around e-bikes. As someone who regularly rides the D&L and other local trails on a traditional bike, I can say bluntly: these trails are no longer safe. I've had a frightening close call. A man came flying toward me on a narrow bridge with music blasting. There was nowhere for me to go. One wrong move and I would have gone down. I've also seen very young kids riding e-bikes unsafely on both trails and sidewalks. We all know serious accidents have already happened. We need statewide legislation with real speed limits, age rules, helmet requirements, and enforcement so our trails remain safe for older adults, families, walkers, runners, and cyclists " not turned into speedways. We need to do a better job in helping the people who were displaced along the Jordan…...
