The Legacy Of Thanksgiving Leftovers

2+ hour, 50+ min ago (641+ words) Our post-Thanksgiving dinner has become a family ritual. Friday's dinner even has its own name: "TurkeyPile." Now that I look at the word in print, it doesn't sound particularly appetizing does it? But it is old-fashioned wonderful. The holiday itself has its own heady anticipations. It's hard to beat the aroma of that roasting gobbler, especially when there is a remaining bouquet of pumpkin and apple pies still hanging in the air. Those scents enhance the long-awaited, bronzed big boy as he comes out of the oven. There's nothing quite like that mouth-watering eagerness. Then there's the reality of getting it all to the dinner plate. It's a challenge to put the carved bird, the dressing, the gravy and five vegetables all on the table, and all hot at the same time. It's a lot for one chef " or even…...

1+ day, 3+ hour ago (868+ words) CICERO " Ty Harper knew Chenango Forks would provide the stiffest test his team had seen all season. Judge refuses to dismiss garbage pit death suit

1+ day, 5+ hour ago (260+ words) A court has refused to dismiss a lawsuit against Chautauqua County over a 2024 death at the county garbage station on Webster Road. State Supreme Court Justice Grace Hanlon also ruled that a countersuit by the county cannot be combined with the case, so the two filings will be considered separately. William Bartoo was accidentally struck July 11, 2024, while depositing garbage into the pit at the county facility. He died from his injuries on July 30. Bartoo's son, as administrator of his estate, sued the county. Chautauqua County subsequently filed a complaint against Sharon Bartoo, who was driving the vehicle that struck her husband. That means Sharon Bartoo is a plaintiff in one case and a defendant in another. Hanlon ruled the cases can't get consolidated. "Courts have consistently held that in order to avoid jury confusion the actions should not be consolidated…...

It’s Still The Economy

1+ day, 5+ hour ago (279+ words) In 1992, James Carville coined the phrase, "It's the economy, stupid," referring to how the economy affects one's personal finances. This phrase was credited with playing a big part in getting Bill Clinton elected President. The economy means different things to many people. Some give their attention daily to the stock market, i.e., the Dow, S&P, NASDAQ. Economists talk about the gross domestic product (GDP), tariffs, trade deficits, the Federal Reserve, and the national debt. While each of these aspects of the economy may be important to the economic engine of the country, most people's attention is focused on their own personal cost of living. Balancing the cost of housing, energy, healthcare, groceries, etc., with their income is what's most important to them. There is no disputing that during the pandemic businesses were closed and there were disruptions in the supply…...

High costs delaying Ripley solar project

1+ day, 5+ hour ago (273+ words) The South Ripley Solar Project is delayed by a number of factors, according to a letter sent by organizers to landowners. Ripley Town Supervisor Laurie Pless recently shared the letter at a town board meeting. The letter explains that tree clearing will not take place in January 2026, as was planned. According to the letter, this is just a delay in the project " not a cancellation. "Due to the current state of the economy, the costs to construct this project have increased far beyond this company's despite our best efforts," according to the letter, signed by South Ripley Solar Project Manager Alex Spiridakis. "There are several factors impacting the project, including import tariffs, high interest rates and federal trade policies that bring uncertainty to cost of material," Spiridakis wrote that developers have invested nearly $30 million in the project "and we remain…...

A Cold Reality: Shelters Prepare Amid Allegations Of Homeless Encampment Rise

1+ day, 5+ hour ago (343+ words) Recently, evidence-backed claims from knowledgeable sources within Chautauqua County have stated there has been a rise in the number of homeless encampments within the city of Jamestown. Even with the many warming shelter locations, it is crucial to ensure that people are utilizing these services rather than attempting to spend a cold winter night on the streets. While many of the assistance organizations seem to be prepared for the hazardous winter months ahead, a rise in encampments could suggest more people are beginning to struggle. Manager of the Code Blue Shelter on Washing Street Victor Flores stated the shelter had come close, but had not been full at the time of the meeting. Flores noted the shelter also serves warm drinks, hot snacks, and other treats and meals frequently. Ward noted the various organizations are incredibly appreciative of those that…...

Cummins Waits Out Demand Slowdown

1+ day, 5+ hour ago (313+ words) It's been a tough year for Cummins Inc., as previously forecast slowdowns in demand have proven to be true for much of 2025. What does 2026 look like? It's too soon to tell. Mark Smith, Cummins chief financial officers, said during a recent conference call with investor analysts that the fourth quarter isn't expected to be any better. Engine shipments to on-highway markets are expected to decrease 15% in the fourth quarter compared to third-quarter levels. "At the risk of sounding cautiously optimistic, I hope that demand in North American on-highway markets is close to bottoming in the fourth quarter in what has been a protracted and difficult slowdown," Smith said. Earlier this year Cummins officials stopped providing revenue or profit projections for 2025. While it's too early to tell if demand for trucks and heavy-duty engines is going to rebound, the fact that…...
